Is a Chemical Peel Right for Your Concern?

Match your skin concern to the right peel approach.

If you have hyperpigmentation, melasma, or dark spots, what helps?

Glycolic or Jessner peel evens skin tone gradually. Multiple sessions build layered results.

If you have active acne or oily, breakout-prone skin, what works?

A salicylic acid peel targets active acne by penetrating into oily follicles. It pairs with ongoing acne treatment.

If you have acne scars or textural irregularity, what option fits?

Microneedling, scheduled on a different day from your peel, builds collagen to soften scar texture. Schedule a microneedling consultation

If you have sun damage, photoaging, or early fine lines, what helps?

A medium-depth peel such as Jessner addresses photoaging with deeper reach. Longer recovery, deeper result.

If this is your first peel or your skin is sensitive, where should you start?

A lower-concentration glycolic peel is the gentlest starting point. Dr. Paltiel adjusts the peel selection to your skin type at consultation.

If you are currently on retinols or strong exfoliants, what should you do?

Stop retinols and exfoliants for 2 weeks before your peel appointment to avoid over-exfoliation and post-peel irritation. This information is provided for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Peel selection depends on your skin type and goals; in-person evaluation is required before any chemical peel treatment.

A peel matched to your skin, not a one-size treatment

A chemical peel only works when it fits your skin. We customize each peel to your skin type and concern, whether that is tone, breakouts, or texture, so you get smoother, brighter skin without overdoing it. At Adult and Pediatric Dermatology in Forest Hills, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michael Paltiel sets the peel type and strength to your skin so the result is even, not irritated.

Benefits of Chemical Peels for Your Skin

Chemical peels are versatile and can address a wide range of skin concerns. Here are some of the improvements our customized peels can offer:

Fade Acne Scars and Blemishes: Reduce the appearance of post-acne marks and shallow scars for a clearer complexion.

Improve Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Gently smooth out fine lines and even soften the look of deeper wrinkles by encouraging new collagen formation.

Even Out Skin Tone: Diminish sun damage, age spots, dark patches like melasma, and hyperpigmentation for a more uniform skin tone.

Brighten Dull, Rough Skin: Remove the buildup of dead, dull skin cells to restore a radiant glow and velvety texture.

Unclog Pores and Prevent Breakouts: Clear away debris and oil from pores (especially with salicylic acid peels), helping to reduce blackheads, whiteheads, and acne.

In short, a properly chosen chemical peel can greatly enhance your skin’s overall appearance, leaving it smoother, clearer, and more youthful. Our team will evaluate your skin concerns to ensure we target the specific issues you want to improve.

Which peel is right for you?

That depends on your skin’s condition, your goals, and how much downtime you can accommodate. During your consultation, we’ll examine your skin and discuss these options. Our goal is to use the least aggressive peel that still achieves the results you want, ensuring both safety and effectiveness.

What to Expect During and After a Chemical Peel

During the procedure, A chemical peel in our office is a straightforward process. First, we’ll cleanse your skin thoroughly. If you’re getting a medium or deep peel, we might protect sensitive areas (like around the eyes or lips) with a topical barrier. Next, we evenly apply the chemical solution with a gentle brush or cotton applicator. You may feel a tingling or warm sensation while the solution is active, this is normal and a sign it’s working. For stronger peels, we sometimes use a small fan or cool compress to improve comfort. The application time is usually just a few minutes, depending on the peel depth. Then, we neutralize the solution (for certain peels) and cleanse the skin again. The whole procedure can take about 20-30 minutes for a light or medium peel (longer for deep peels due to prep and monitoring). Right after the peel, your skin will likely be red and sensitive, almost like a sunburn. We’ll apply a soothing ointment or serum to kick-start the healing. You can go home shortly after.
