What is a thread lift?

A thread lift is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that lifts and tightens your skin using special dissolvable threads. We use PDO (polydioxanone) threads, which are medical-grade sutures also used in surgery, but here they serve as supports under the skin. After numbing the area, our provider inserts these fine threads under your skin using a needle or cannula. The threads are gently pulled to lift drooping areas like the cheeks, jawline, neck, or brows, giving an immediate, subtle lift to your features. Over the next few months, the threads stimulate your body’s collagen production, which improves skin firmness and texture. PDO threads naturally dissolve within about 6-8 months, but the new collagen they create can sustain the lifting effect for up to 1-2 years. In essence, a thread lift achieves results similar to a facelift but without surgery, large incisions, or a long recovery.

Thread Lift Treated Areas

Who Is a Good Candidate for
a thread lift?

A thread lift is ideal for adults who are starting to notice sagging or looseness in areas like the cheeks, jawline, eyebrows, or neck, typically those in their late 30s to late 50s with mild to moderate skin laxity. It’s a great option if you:

  • Want a noticeable lift but aren’t ready (or willing) to undergo a surgical facelift.
  • Are generally in good health and have fairly firm skin (very loose skin might require surgery for significant results).
  • Have realistic expectations, thread lift will refresh your appearance and rewind the clock a few years, but it won’t duplicate the dramatic effect of a major surgery.
  • Prefer a quick recovery and a lower-cost procedure compared to traditional facelift surgery.

During your consultation, our dermatology team will examine your skin and discuss your goals. We’ll be honest about what a thread lift can achieve for you. If you have very advanced sagging or heavily sun-damaged skin, we might recommend other treatments (or a combination approach). Often, patients who can no longer get enough lift from fillers but don’t want surgery find thread lifts to be the perfect middle-ground solution.

The Thread Lift Procedure – What to Expect What to Expect

Preparation: On the day of your thread lift, you’ll arrive at our Forest Hills office and get comfortable in a treatment room. We cleanse and mark the areas to be treated. You’ll receive a local anesthetic (numbing injection) in those areas, so you stay awake, but the target areas are fully numb and you won’t feel pain.

Placement of Threads: Once you’re numb, our provider uses a fine needle or cannula to insert the PDO threads under your skin gently. Each thread is placed strategically to lift the skin and tissue. For example, to elevate the cheeks and jowls, threads might be inserted near the ear and angled toward the corners of the mouth. We treat one section at a time, inserting threads in a mesh or lattice pattern for even lifting. You might feel some light pressure or tugging, but no sharp pain. As the thread is inserted, tiny barbs on the thread anchor into the droopy tissue. Then the provider carefully pulls the thread to lift the skin to a higher, firmer position. Once the thread is in the right place, it’s trimmed and stays hidden under the skin. We typically use several threads per area (for example, 2-3 threads per cheek) to achieve a uniform lift.

Duration: The entire procedure usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how many areas we’re treating. Because it’s relatively quick and done with local anesthesia, many patients liken it to an extended filler appointment – you’re in and out in under an hour or two.
After the procedure, we’ll give you an ice pack to minimize any swelling, and after a brief observation, you’ll be free to go home the same day. There’s no need for bandages, and any tiny insertion points are covered with small steri-strips or heal on their own quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Results aren’t permanent, but they’re fairly long-lasting for a non-surgical treatment. The lifting effect from your thread lift can last approximately 1 to 2 years. The PDO threads themselves will dissolve after about 6-8 months, but by then, your body has produced new collagen in those areas. That collagen can maintain the lift for many months afterward. Over time, as natural aging continues, you may see skin start to loosen again. At that point, you can choose to have another thread lift or explore other options. We’ll help you figure out the right maintenance schedule. Some patients repeat the procedure annually or biannually to keep their results fresh.
When performed by trained medical professionals like our board-certified dermatologists, thread lifts are very safe. PDO threads have been used in surgery for decades and are FDA-approved for skin lifting. Because it’s minimally invasive, the risks are low: no general anesthesia risks, and complications are rare. You might have minor side effects like bruising, swelling, or slight tenderness for a few days. In very rare cases, a thread could migrate or become visible under the skin, but our experienced providers take precautions to place them correctly. We’ll review all risks and benefits with you beforehand. Overall, thread lifts have an excellent safety record, and our team has performed many procedures with great outcomes.
A traditional facelift is a surgical procedure that involves incisions (usually around the ears, into the hairline), lifting and repositioning deeper tissues and excess skin, and requires general anesthesia. It produces a significant and long-term result (often 5-10+ years of improvement) but comes with higher cost, surgical risks, potential scarring, and a recovery period of a few weeks. A thread lift, on the other hand, is nonsurgical. There are no large incisions – only needles. It’s done under local anesthesia in under an hour, with minimal downtime. The trade-off is that the result is subtler and lasts a shorter time (1-2 years). Think of a thread lift as a “lunchtime facelift” – a quick procedure for a moderate lift. Some patients use thread lifts to “preview” what a facelift might do, or to tide them over until they decide on surgery. Others repeat thread lifts every year or two and avoid surgery altogether. It depends on your needs. We will give you an honest comparison during your consultation so you can decide which option aligns with your goals.
The procedure is generally well-tolerated. We use a strong medical-grade numbing agent to completely desensitize the treatment areas. You might feel a slight pinch with the numbing injection (similar to Botox or filler injections). After that, patients typically only feel pressure, mild tugging, or a weird “tight” sensation as the threads are inserted, but no sharp pain. Our providers are very gentle and communicate with you throughout the process. After the numbing wears off later in the day, you might feel some soreness or tightness (almost like having done a tough workout for your face!). Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen are usually all that’s needed, if anything. We’ll provide you with aftercare instructions to stay comfortable, but many people find they don’t even need pain medicine and can go about their day normally.
