- Fade Acne Scars and Blemishes: Reduce the appearance of post-acne marks and shallow scars for a clearer complexion.
- Improve Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Gently smooth out fine lines and even soften the look of deeper wrinkles by encouraging new collagen formation.
- Even Out Skin Tone: Diminish sun damage, age spots, dark patches like melasma, and hyperpigmentation for a more uniform skin tone.
- Brighten Dull, Rough Skin: Remove the buildup of dead, dull skin cells to restore a radiant glow and velvety texture.
- Unclog Pores and Prevent Breakouts: Clear away debris and oil from pores (especially with salicylic acid peels), helping to reduce blackheads, whiteheads, and acne.

What to Expect During and After a
Chemical Peel
During the procedure, A chemical peel in our office is a straightforward process. First, we’ll cleanse your skin thoroughly. If you’re getting a medium or deep peel, we might protect sensitive areas (like around the eyes or lips) with a topical barrier. Next, we evenly apply the chemical solution with a gentle brush or cotton applicator. You may feel a tingling or warm sensation while the solution is active – this is normal and a sign it’s working. For stronger peels, we sometimes use a small fan or cool compress to improve comfort. The application time is usually just a few minutes, depending on the peel depth. Then, we neutralize the solution (for certain peels) and cleanse the skin again. The whole procedure can take about 20-30 minutes for a light or medium peel (longer for deep peels due to prep and monitoring). Right after the peel, your skin will likely be red and sensitive, almost like a sunburn. We’ll apply a soothing ointment or serum to kick-start the healing. You can go home shortly after.

Frequently Asked Questions
Chemical peels are one of our go-to treatments for acne scars. By removing the top layers of skin and stimulating collagen, peels can gradually soften the appearance of acne scars. For shallow to moderate acne scars, a medium peel (or a series of medium peels) often works wonders, smoothing out uneven texture over time. For deeper or pitted scars, we might recommend a deep peel or combine the peel with other treatments (like microneedling or fillers) for best results. Many patients in Forest Hills come to us with acne scarring concerns, and we’ve seen great improvements after peels – the scars become less visible as newer, healthier skin comes to the surface. During your consultation, we’ll assess your scars and craft a plan – it might involve one or multiple treatment sessions – to achieve smoother skin. Rest assured, improving acne scars with chemical peels is possible, and our dermatology team has extensive experience in this area.
When performed by a medical professional, chemical peels are very safe. At Adult & Pediatric Dermatology, all peels are administered by our board-certified dermatologists or trained medical staff, so you’re in expert hands. We evaluate your skin type, discuss your medical history, and choose an appropriate peel strength – this personalized approach maximizes safety. It’s normal to experience some temporary redness, peeling, or dryness after a peel. In rare cases, more serious side effects can occur (like infection or prolonged pigment changes), but we take every precaution to prevent these. We’ll give you clear pre- and post-peel instructions, and we’re available to answer any concerns during recovery. By carefully following our guidance (especially regarding sun avoidance and not picking the skin), complications are highly unlikely. Overall, chemical peels have a long track record of safety in dermatology, and we make the process as gentle and comfortable as possible for you.
Most patients find chemical peels quite tolerable. You might feel a mild stinging or burning sensation for a few minutes as the solution is on your skin, but it shouldn’t be painful. For light peels, the feeling is often described as a slight tingling or warmth. Medium peels can be a bit more intense, but we’ll monitor you closely – we can fan your skin or use cooling methods to ease discomfort. Deep peels are done with anesthesia or sedation, so you won’t feel pain during the peel itself. After the procedure, as your skin heals, you may have some tenderness, similar to a sunburn, but this is manageable with gentle skin care and recommended products. Overall, “no pain, no gain” doesn’t apply here – chemical peels are designed to improve your skin without causing significant pain. We’ll do everything we can to keep you comfortable.
