Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a liquid obtained from your own blood that contains a high concentration of cells called platelets. These platelets have special growth factors which can help with wound healing, rejuvenation and stimulation of hair growth.
Studies have shown that PRP can be used as a safe and effective treatment option for male and female pattern hair loss which is the most common type of hair loss that most men and women experience as we age.
When you present to our office for evaluation of hair loss we conduct an evaluation of your hair loss to determine if you are a right candidate for PRP hair restoration. If you’re like most people who loose hair with age, chances are that you have pattern hair loss also known as androgenetic alopecia. Other disorders, such as thyroid disease and anemia, however, need to be excluded by blood tests and evaluation of your scalp and hair.
If PRP hair loss therapy is appropriate, we can begin your treatment at the time of your consultation or schedule your PRP injection session at a later date. We ask that you avoid taking any aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and other anti-inflammatory medications for one week before and after your procedure. You should also not take multivitamins or blood thinning agents such as vitamin E, vitamin A, Ginko, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, Niacin supplements, and Essential Fatty Acids at least one week prior to procedure.
When you are scheduled for your PRP procedure please avoid heavy exercise one day before your procedure. Avoid alcohol, cigarettes for 3 days before your PRP session. Feel free to wash your hair the morning of the PRP session or a day before. It is fine to color your hair up to 3 days before the procedure.
Please increase your intake of fluids the day before your procedure by simply drinking 2 glasses of water in the morning, 2 glasses at lunch and 2 glasses at dinner. Please eat a normal breakfast or lunch the day of your PRP session and drink plenty of water.
When you come in for your PRP session your blood will be drawn just like it is done in the lab. While your blood is processed to obtain PRP, a topical anesthetic is applied to your scalp which helps reduce discomfort. When PRP is ready and your scalp is sufficiently anesthetized, PRP is injected into the areas of the scalp where hair loss is notable. We will administer the next two treatments at 4-6 week intervals. You will be asked to return 3 months later. At this visit (6 months from your first treatment) your response will be assessed.
The treatments are administered by a physician at the Adult and Pediatric Dermatology take about a half hour to 45 minutes. Patients are monitored photographically to assess the benefits of therapy. We will modify your treatment schedule based on your individual response to therapy. The physicians at Adult and Pediatric Dermatology have the expertise to know when PRP for hair loss is appropriate and the skill to inject the proper quantity of PRP at just the right depth to achieve the optimal desired result.
Also referred to as Vampire facial, as featured on keeping up with the Kardashians. Blood is drawn, placed into a machine to extract plasma. Micro needling is initially done, and PRP is simultaneously rubbed in. Promotes collagen production, improves skin elasticity and gives an overall healthy looking appearance.
Microneedling is commonly paired with Platelet Rich Plasma for optimal results. Blood is drawn from the patient; IT is then placed in a machine (centrifuge) to extract the plasma from the red blood cells. The plasma is then used for multiple concerns such as scar revision, fillers for nasolabial folds, cheeks, marionette lines, and filling acne scars.
