How does Excimer UVB Therapy work?
With psoriasis, skin regeneration takes place many times faster than with normal, healthy skin. This leads to the formation of plaques. The causes are not yet fully understood, but it is generally agreed that the disease occurs more often when there is a genetic predisposition. A range of other factors like stress or emotional strain may also aggravate the symptoms.
The therapy for psoriasis involves targeting the affected areas of skin with high doses of monochro- matic Excimer light. This normally causes the symp- toms to disappear completely for a long time. Excimer UVB therapy is even used today to effectively treat some forms of neurodermatitis.
In the case of vitiligo, highly focused Excimer UVB treatment stimulates the production of new pigment cells in the unpigmented areas of skin. The result is that the white patches of skin shrink.
What can the treatment do?
There are many different forms of psoriasis. The loca- lized variety, where defined plaques occur on specific areas of the body, is the most suited for this therapy. The highly focused application of Excimer light to the affected areas of skin protects the surrounding healthy skin, and the success of the therapy is much greater than with conventional UV cabins. Because only the affected areas of skin are treated, the Excimer light can be administered in a much higher dose, leading to faster results. Excimer UVB therapy has often proven successful in cases that were previ- ously considered difficult to treat. The same is true for the treatment of vitiligo.
A further advantage of this therapy is that relatively few sessions are required and the total treatment period is considerably shorter than in the case of con- ventional light therapy.
Before and after treatment: What you need to know
· Unlike many other forms of treatment with light, here patients are not required to avoid exposure to sunlight.
· After Excimer UVB therapy the treated areas of skin may redden slightly for some hours, somewhat like a sunburn. You should have something at hand for this, for example a cooling crème.
· Some blistering may occasionally occur, but this will heal within a few days.
· You can promote the effectiveness of Excimer UVB therapy through appropriate measures after treat- ment. For example, you should avoid stress, pay attention to personal hygiene and a balanced diet, and avoid excessive consumption of alcohol.
